Well, it's easy to explain why airports like Heathrow (London), Charles de Gaulle (Paris), Fiumicino (Rome), and Istanbul Airport in Turkey are the main hubs in their countries. Both airports are located in each country's most populous cities, making them the leading choice for several airlines.
But what about Frankfurt?
In Germany, the choice of main hub is a little different from what is usual in Europe. Frankfurt am Main Airport, a unique and strategic choice, is located 15km from the center of Frankfurt, the fifth largest city in Germany. There are several intriguing explanations that can justify the choice of Frankfurt as the main hub in Germany. The city is located in the central region of the country, being at a strategic distance relatively close to other large European cities.

Frankfurt is also home to one of Europe's largest airlines, the airport is the main hub for the German airline Lufthansa which makes it a crucial connection point between various destinations around the world. The third big reason is the large financial center in Frankfurt, which even houses the European central bank, making many businesspeople travel to the city.
Despite being the fourth largest city in terms of number of tourists, Frankfurt Airport plays a significant role in global connectivity. It is the largest airport in the country, with approximately 64 million travelers passing through each year. However, only approximately 2.5 million travel directly to Frankfurt, highlighting the airport's status as one of the largest connection hubs in the world.
